Celebrating identity project

buy the book: A TEACHER'S GUIDE TO CELEBRATING POSITIVE RACIAL IDENTITY

Children need to feel a sense of belonging and acceptance to thrive, and teachers are in a unique position to create a positive perspective on how children feel in society and how they choose to go forward. The book does not focus on history (which is undoubtedly important), but on the present and future by providing teachers with skills that are practical and positive.

The book will take you on a self-reflective journey and you will learn to engage parents and children, celebrate the heritages of all and create acceptance and belonging.

Whatever the demographics of your school community, this book will help because the framework underpinning the book, humility, empathy and courage, is fundamental to creating a school community that lifts everyone.

training for teachers: CELEBRATING CHILDREN'S IDENTITY

We offer training for teachers. Sessions are for one day. The focus is on empowering the teacher to create meaningful inclusivity and to genuinely appreciate the diversity of the children in their classroom.

We delve into the first part of the book, 'Beginning with You' and take teachers on a self-reflective journey to support their personal growth and to develop the strengths and skills they need to celebrate their students' heritages. This is a non-judgemental, supportive and interactive session with the opportunity to co-create resources.

about our journey

Parent Power won the Social Innovation Fellowship, an initiative funded by the Peabody Community Foundation. The aim of the fellowship was to identify an underserved need in our society. Using  Human Centred Design (HCD), also known as co-design, we integrated user feedback and preferences into every step of a needed product and service.

Parent Power has worked with underserved communities from Black and Minority Ethnic communities and identified the need to raise the profile of racial equality for all children. Much research has identified the need for all children to feel a sense of belonging and a place where they can thrive.

Our question from this process was, how might we promote healthy resettlement of migrant children and their parents in the UK, ensuring that they are mentally, socially, and emotionally adjusted to life in the UK?

Through synthesising our research question, we created a handbook for teachers, together with training and curriculum resources. Our most recent publication, A Teachers Guide to Celebrating Positive Racial Identity promises to address the sensitive and sometimes difficult subject of racism and race in the school community.

Schools are the gateway for children to thrive, particularly those from marginalised communities. Children who do not feel that their differences are valued can develop low self-esteem and make decisions that become a barrier to learning. For many teachers, it can be daunting to talk about race or know how to meaningfully embrace diversity. The book employs a framework based on having humility, empathy and courage. These are essential, non-cognitive skills which facilitate healthy identities and self-esteem in children which positively impacts wellbeing and learning.

We want to take our work forward by raising the profile of children and celebrating positive racial identities. We have created a training module and we are aiming to build into the curriculum more guidance and support to develop the skills, confidence and understanding of teachers.
